Five Austin ISD schools could be getting a name change

Each of the schools are now named after people tied to the confederacy.

AISD officials say the board has been in conversations about these names changes since September. Now they say the discussion is not if the names of the schools will be changed, but how to go about doing it. One priority mentioned last night was having students and the community involved in the renaming process and reducing potential costs.

The five schools discussed are Fulmore Middle School, Lanier High school, Reagan High School, Eastside Memorial High and the John T. Allan facility.

The board talked about not only changing the names, but also providing a deeper understanding of the history of those names.

Officials estimate the costs would be about 13 thousand dollars for each elementary school and 77 thousand for each secondary school.

"No decisions have been made on name changes, if the board does decide to move forward with changing of names of schools, there’s a process laid out to provide input from community and stakeholders on what those names may be," said Brian Hill from AISD.

AISD's policy states that schools can go through a name change if they're not in compliance with the districts core beliefs and values.
