Mayor Steve Adler and members of the Austin City Council proclaimed today, October 5, 2017 as Mia Garcia Day in Austin. It’s a rare honor for someone only 10 years old. Mia is a straight A student and a Tejano singer following in the footsteps of Selena.

One of her songs says it all. The lyrics include, “I'm not just any girl, I’m la reina del mundo” which translates to queen of the world. And she’s heading for the top by singing. Mia says, “I just go with the flow. Whenever I sing I just feel free."

And she loves how her music moves people. Mia adds, “Sometimes they're having a bad day, or they're just having bad luck today. And I like to think I cheer them up."

But as much as she loves singing, Mia also enjoys being a kid. Mia does gymnastics, karate, guitar and swimming. And her parents tell me they use those activities to make sure she does well in school. Mia says, “My mom always tells me if you don't keep your grades up you'll lose all your extracurricular activities. And I really love all my extracurricular activities and I love singing. So I always work hard to keep my grades up."

Right now Mia is riding high on the popularity of her new song, “Boom, Boom, Boom” which is already getting wide airplay on Tejano radio. Long may she boom, boom, boom.
