APD: Teen killed NW Austin man during marijuana sale

Police have arrested a teen for the shooting death of man last week in Northwest Austin. And investigators say it was a marijuana deal gone wrong.

Austin Police say 19-year-old Mosses Howell is charged with murder, a first degree felony, for the death of 26-year-old Anthony E. Brown.

It happened Thursday, Dec. 29, at approximately 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 12900 block of Quinn Trail.

Investigators say officers were dispatched to the home for a shots fired call, and when they arrived they found Brown with obvious trauma to his body and another person performing CPR on him. Officers took over resuscitation efforts until Austin-Travis County EMS arrived and transported Brown to St. David’s Medical Center in Round Rock, where he was pronounced deceased.

Detectives say Brown lived at the home and had agreed to meet two males there to sell them approximately $600 worth of marijuana. When the two arrived they knocked on the door and Brown stepped onto the front porch to speak with them. During the transaction, Brown was shot in the chest.

Police say that Brown had a 30-second telephone call just before the shooting from Mosses Howell. Detectives were initially unable to locate Howell but they were able to find his former girlfriend. She told police that Howell had told her in a text message that he could not be in Austin because he had shot someone during an attempted robbery at a residence. Howell told her he didn't believe anyone would be at the home when he tried to rob it.

Howell was charged with the murder on Tuesday and the warrant was turned over to the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, who located and arrested Howell the same day, detectives say.

Police say more arrests are expected.
