A bicyclist was killed Tuesday night after he was struck by a vehicle in East Austin.

It happened just east of the Springdale Road and MLK Jr. Blvd. intersection.

Austin-Travis County EMS says the victim died at the scene.

Austin Police say a 2011 black Toyota FJ Cruiser was traveling westbound on MLK Jr. Blvd. in the inside lane when it struck a bicyclist head-on traveling eastbound in the inside westbound lane.

Wednesday morning, the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 53-year-old Charlie Bunton Jr. His family says Bunton Jr. was a gentle giant and he will be very missed.

APD said the driver -- identified as Joshua Christopher Brosemer, 38 -- stayed at the scene. He is now facing DWI charges. Online records show him to be in custody at the Travis County Jail under a $40,000 bond. Records also show Brosemer's birthday was the night before the fatal collision.

“You never want to see an accident, especially a bike," neighbor Ray Horton said.

Horton lives right next to where the crash happened and came outside because of the police lights. He was sad to hear someone was killed.

He also says crashes happen in that area often because of high speeds on the road and a hill that can be a blind spot for some.

“With the speed, they have a lot of accidents right there," Horton said.

He says this is the first time a bicyclist has been hit that he knows of, but he's still worried more will be hit.
