1. What is pre-diabetes?
Pre-diabetes is a serious condition where you have already lost 20-25 % of the function of your pancreas and insulin production and you have an 80% chance of developing diabetes in the next 5-10 years.
2. Can I still prevent diabetes if I find out that I have pre-diabetes?
Yes, you may prevent diabetes with proper medical care and you can also prevent and treat some complications which may already be present even if you only have pre-diabetes.
3. If I have diabetes should I see an endocrinologist (hormone and diabetes specialist)?
Yes, just like when you have a heart problem you should see a cardiologist, if you have diabetes you should see an endocrinologist at least once. He /she will then coordinate care with your primary care physician and make sure that your diabetes is excellent control. All studies have shown that you can prevent complications from diabetes if the sugars are well controlled.
